Blue Mountain Ski Area

The Blue Mountain Ski Area Wastewater Treatment Plant treats the sanitary wastewater from the ski area located on the north slope of the Blue Mountain in Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon County near the Village of Little Gap. The treatment plant has an existing installed capacity of 60,000 gallons per day. Permitting is currently underway to expand the treatment capacity to 200,000 gallons per day to serve expanded ski area operations to include expanded skiing operations, time share and full ownership condominiums, hotel/conference center and banquet facilities, restaurants and lounges and year round recreational facilities. The treatment plant discharges treated and disinfected wastewater to the Aquashicola Creek downstream of its confluence with the Buckwha creek.

Currently peak flows are generated from the ski area during weekends and holidays during ski season. The plant permit requires treatment to secondary treatment standards (25 milligrams per liter BOD and 30 milligrams per liter suspended solids). Laboratory analyses show the plant meets and exceeds these treatment levels at all times.
